09jan24
09:30
beginning
the longest journey
heading to an art museum
under the soundtrack
of W. Amadeus Mozart
composed of larghettos
adagios and andantes

300 seconds
and 500,000 millimeters
from the travelers' lodging

towards
a 600 years's selection
of visual arts history

mainly
Western European
with a few brazilian touches

in the permanent exhibition
museum's transformation
but that's for next week

let's start this voyage
from the bottom up
in the 2nd basement

to visit the grand "Indigenous Stories"
or perhaps it would be even "less bad"
to name it excerpts from indigenous arts

there are several exhibitions in one:

PACHAKUTI: THE WORLD UPSIDE DOWN, curated by Sandra Gamarra, Quechuas [currently Peru]
BREAKING REPRESENTATION, curated by Nigel Borell, Maoris [currently New Zealand]
TIME IS NOT TIME, Borges Karaja Renata Tupusamba - Indigenous people from different nations currently Brazil]
VÁRVES: HIDDEN FROM THE DAY, curated by Inerte Snerby Susanne Hætta - Sami [currently Norway]

Already on the 1st basement floor
WOVEN SKINS,
a solo show by Melissa Coy and Navajo weaving [currently United States]
The exhibitions,
as stated in the description
in "Quadro Ferido", from 1994,
by Adriana Varejão,
intend to provoke
"sharp crossings
in the plane of cultures;"
in a de-Westernizing tour-de-force".

Around noon,
I quickly visit
the main collection "In Transformation",
in search of photographs
of representations of indigenous people
by: Europeans on trips:
Agostino Brunias;
Franz Post; Brazilians in colonization: Victor Meirelles;
in between places, because I don't know if it fits:
Djanira
indigenous people in self-representation: Mahku,
Carmezia Emiliano; Denilson Baniwa;
I go down to the 1st floor
NOURISHING RELATIONSHIPS: FAMILY,  COMMUNITY AND LAND, Curatorial Team Indigenous Ways and Decolonization, National Gallery [now Canada]

CONSTRUCTION, curated by: Abraham Cruzvilleges [now Mexico];

STORIES OF PAINTING IN THE DESERT, curated by: Bruce Johnson-McLean - various aboriginal peoples [now Australia]
